Academic English Skills

What is Academic English Skills?

Academic English Skills (AES) is a qualification that provides you with the thorough training in language and academic skills needed to achieve your academic potential at the university of your choice.

Key skills that AES will develop include:

  • Reading effectively and critically
  • Making notes in lectures and presentations
  • Delivering presentations and participating in academic seminars
  • Researching, planning and writing academic essays
  • Developing the accuracy and range in written and spoken language required to express yourself appropriately, with clarity and confidence

Which programme contains AES?

Our Foundation and Undergraduate Year 1 programmes have AES built into the timetable from your first day at Bellerbys College. This means that you will have more time to focus on the English Language skills needed for a successful education in the UK.

What is AES acceptance in place of IELTS?

Foundation students have the opportunity to progress to one of over 40* universities without taking a further IELTS test to provide their English language level, while Undergraduate Year 1 students can progress to 13* universities without a further IELTS test.

Zhizi from China

"I believe that I have done so well here because my English level has really improved. At my previous school in England, our class was made up of Chinese students and English students and we did not mix together. This meant that I continued to speak in Chinese in class. Here at Bellerbys, my class is made up of so many different nationalities including Malaysian, Indian and Nigerian. Our common language is English so this has made me improve. I have also advanced my English level through living with a host family in the local area. At meal times, and around the house, we all speak English to each other."
