Student ambassador, Devika, from India

My name is Devika, I am from India and am a student at Bellerbys College Brighton, currently studying Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Here, I will be sharing my experience of studying the Prepare for Success programme ahead of starting my A Level courses.

Being as prepared as possible

I think it is always a good idea to know at least a little in advance about anything new you might start. With Prepare for Success, I was able to learn much more about doing A Levels and about studying in the UK in general. It was also very helpful with regard to practicing my English language skills, and the live online classes that were held twice a week were useful too. There were a number of videos available to us which covered all the various aspects that we needed to consider in order to be prepared for studying and living in the UK. From basic information of the English language, British history and the local culture, to information about our respective schools and our chosen education course, we were taught a lot. There was also useful information about living in the UK available to us through the course. This helped us learn important things that just residents would know, for example, the cost of and how to access public travel.

Improving our student experience

My favourite part of the programme was the enrichment classes – we had cooking classes, art history classes and guest speakers coming and talking every Friday. It was a lot of fun and I got to learn a lot of new things. For example, the cooking classes taught me famous English recipes and also other recipes from around the world. The guest speakers were always so inspiring and there was so much to learn from them.

Worthwhile and beneficial

I think that, overall, the course was very helpful. Picking one or two elements from the course as the most helpful would not do it justice - it was all great. The enrichment classes along with the information and practice slides, the videos and the live classes with tutors made it a great, interesting, fun and beneficial experience. The slides and videos helped us learn so much about British culture and the English language - I also learnt so many new words with the help of those slides - and, last but not least, the live classes helped guide us through all elements of and prepare us for life in the UK. All in all, it was a great experience!
