Carol Yeung

Our Maths department consists of Dr Rehana Bari, Margaret Alton and myself.  As a team we pride ourselves in the quality of our teaching.  We encourage innovation and two-way dialogue in class and we initiate a constructive learning atmosphere.  

We identify students’ strengths and weaknesses, hence adapting and utilising tailored teaching methods accordingly.  Our aim is to help every student to achieve their highest potential.  We are able to teach up to the advanced level to those most able Mathematicians, while also giving individual attention and support to those who struggle.  Our exam results prove the success of this approach.

 With reference to my background, I was born in Hong Kong and came to study in England when I was 15.  After a degree in Maths and Statistics, I chose a career in the Actuarial field, as a Pension Consultant and Project Manager.  After seven years I decided to become a teacher, and I have never looked back since.

I find Maths endlessly fascinating and intriguing and I am very passionate about sharing my knowledge.  Teaching enables me to convey this enthusiasm to the students.  The fact that I learned in a second language gives me a greater understanding about the difficulties my students face, and this has established my teaching style.  There is nothing more rewarding than to see students becoming more confident and creative in the way they think and use Mathematics.

My experience has made it easier to relate to students.  They can confide in me as I probably went through what they do.  I also give them advice in terms of their choice of degree and potential mathematical career path.

I often look back with gratitude to my sojourn in an international school similar to Bellerbys.  Hence I am determined to make my students’ time here enjoyable and inspiring, as well as being academically successful.
