Circus Themed Treats at the 2010 Brighton May Ball
Big hair, dazzling colours and a clown suit were all on show for this year's May Ball.
by David Kam
After the ladies had fretted about clashing outfits and the men had made sure they were 'dressed to impress', all the students of Bellerbys Brighton returned to the college last Friday evening. When they arrived they found the Brighton campus had been transformed into a brilliantly classy yet quirky circus, with splashes of bright colour covering every surface! Yes, it was that time of year again, time for the much anticipated annual May Ball, organised by Student Services, with this year's theme of ‘Cirque du Soleil’.
Guests made their grand entrance into the college, welcomed by a pair of life-size horses, walking on hind-legs, whilst grandiose decorations were hung around the school building, including swinging trapeze artists, lions, flaming hoops and comical photo-booth screens, not to mention the colossal legs of a harlequin jutting from the library ceiling!
All of this work was planned and executed by the Bellerbys Brighton Art Foundation students and teachers. The quirky ambience was made even more surreal with the bizarrely mellifluous tunes being played from the Cirque du Soleil soundtracks.
The 'Bellerbys family' in attendance were treated to an impossibly wide range of food : BBQ, sushi, kebabs, burgers, fairy cakes, popcorn, ice cream, candy floss and the 'oh-so-irresistible' chocolate fountain complemented with cream puffs, honeycomb and fruits. The serving team had certainly impressed us, specially clad in smart attire with absolutely convivial hospitality.
As in previous years, winners from the Bellerbys Extra Factor competition were invited to perform at the start of the event. This year, we have Wand Nguyen and Yoshino Hirota playing the piano, Emin Afandi and Veronika singing and a band showcase by Samy and Takuya. Shortly after that, the dance floor was opened and guests were prompted to flaunt their moves. A lady was spotted wiggling her hula hoop with effortless poise and grace. Teachers or students, everyone all had a blast!
For the first time at the annual ball, students and teachers were lavished with Best Dressed Awards and a prize-winning raffle. Fifty pounds were generously given to the winners: Anastasiya Stepovyk donning an ethereal blue dress, while Boris Volovsky and Vladislav Dorokhin sporting an Afro and bright suits took the prize for the male students. Winning teachers were even more impressive as Ms Alix Dryden hand-made her outfit whilst Mr Dominic Pates fearlessly wore a bright red suit. The fortunate victor of the raffle, on the other hand, was Ling Chu.
Much kudos to the whole committee; Student Services, Student Council, Catering Team, Art Department and paramountly, Mr Addison and Mr Corcut. Ms Alix Dryden commented : "All the art department (teachers and students) worked extremely hard creating wonderful displays for the ball that were a huge success. I was very inspired by all the effort, enthusiasm and ingenuity from the department and have enjoyed being a part of such a creative team!"
By 11.30pm, the ball came to an end with guests reluctantly leaving yet entirely sober. All thanks to the limit of alcoholic drinks! What a sensible college! Another closing of a superbly incandescent chapter filled with great memories in Bellerbys Brighton 2010 and more to come!
Bellerbys Student Wins First Prize in Piano CompetitionWand Nguyen Hong Quang, 17, a Bellerbys Brighton A Level student from Vietnam, was awarded first prize in the prestigious Senior Championship of the Springboard Festival Piano Competition held in Brighton on the weekend of March 27th and 28th. He was chosen as one of six finalists in the competition which included 20 of the best young pianists in the area. Wand played in three of the five classes including Bach's Prelude and Fugue No 12 , Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata first movement and Fats Waller's 'Alligator Crawl'. He came first in each of these classes and was the winner of the overall final on Sunday evening. The Adjudicator, Dennis Lee, commended Wand's convincing capturing of the 'mood' of the pieces. He played everything from memory and all agreed his playing was inspiring and confident. Carol Alderson, the College Music Coordinator who guided both Wand and Yoshino Hirota, another Bellerbys A Level student, though the competition commented: "Wand is a great credit to the college. He is fine musician and I hope he takes his music further." Wand will be taking his final A Level exams in June (Geography, Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Sociology) and has a conditional offer from Imperial College, London to study Civil Engineering. Yoshino, from Japan is also a credit to the college and herself, as she had to overcome chronic shyness to take part in the event. She was perhaps rather unlucky to have been in the same competition as Wand as she is an amazing Jazz pianist. Well done to both Wand and Yoshino! Nigel Addison, the College Principal, presented students with their awards and noted: 'I am so pleased that our students are continuing to maintain the excellent tradition we have of teaching so many first class mathematicians here at Bellerbys Brighton. Brighton Student Receives Bursary from Cambridge University
Bo Wen Wang, 19, from Dalian, China, has received a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Bursary from Cambridge University to help him with his degree level studies in Engineering.
Bo Wen who will complete his A level course at Bellerbys Brighton in June has a conditional offer from Homerton College, Cambridge University, and needs to achieve A grades in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry to confirm his place.
Bo Wen has particular admiration for the intelligence, patience and kindness of Dr. Butcher, his Further Maths teacher and he has found the teaching at Bellerbys overall to be 'great'.
During his two year A Level course he has stayed with a charming host family in Hove whom he now regards as friends, whose cooking is excellent - mainly English menus - so high praise from a Chinese student!
Working as a volunteer at the British Heart Foundation charity shop in Hove in his spare time was a memorable experience for him as he learnt a great deal about the generosity of the natives of Brighton and Hove! He also is an expert calligrapher and enjoys playing pop music on the guitar.
The Vice Principal, Peter Corcut commented, 'Bo Wen has been an excellent student who combines the qualities of dedication, intellectual gifts and modesty! We hope he achieves the grades he needs and goes on to have a sparkling academic career at Cambridge!'
Brighton Students Finish 11th in a Nationwide Investment Competition

A team from Bellerbys Brighton last month finished 11th out of 8,000 entrants in a UK wide investment game for students, the Student Portfolio Challenge 2007/8. This is a remarkable achievement.
The group named Glitter, assisted by their teacher, Duncan Stringer, managed to turn a virtual portfolio of £96,000 into £215,700 in just three months. This is especially impressive given the recent falling stock markets across the world.
All students are studying A Levels at Bellerbys Brighton and are captained by Wang Li (Lily), who is obviously highly talented in this field and wishes to pursue a career in Financial Engineering. Her team mates are Ying Peng (Leo), Yu Qi Zhu (Peter) and Liu Lindi (Lindy).
Glitter will now progress to the Regional Finals in London on 19th March. The top prize for the winning team is a trip to Wall Street, New York, plus prize money for both the group and their school. We wish them the very best of luck!
