Sarah Brooker

"I run the English Language Preparation department in Hove, but I also liaise with the other centres to make sure their ELP departments are run in the same way. I’m also the module leader for all the English parts of Foundation.

All of the courses here are preparing students for university, but when they apply, a lot of the students don’t necessarily have the English level that they need to understand their subjects delivered in English. And so we can offer them English courses that are geared to academic study and making sure that they will understand their courses when they progress.

I really enjoy meeting all the different students – everybody’s different. They are enthusiastic about everything. They’re young people with everything ahead of them. For me it’s the enjoyment of being with different people every day and reacting to their personalities and their needs. They’re ambitious; they have all these plans and it’s nice to feel that you’re a part of it. I can’t think of many jobs where you’d meet so many different people from so many different cultures and get so many different perspectives on life."
