Brighton - Activities

What's on at Bellerbys Brighton

There's a lot going on at Bellerbys Brighton.  We always encourage students to develop themselves constructively in whatever way they wish.  If any student would like to suggest ideas for activities, clubs or exercises, we will do our best to support you in your efforts.  Our Activities Manager is dedicated to making sure you make the most of your time at Bellerbys College.

Sports

Bellerbys has many excellent links with local sports organisations in Brighton.  Regular football, gym, badminton, basketball, yoga and squash sessions are held and students can get discounts on activities at local dance schools, fitness andcentres.

This year we held two very successful sports tournaments.  The soccer tournament involved over 100 players and was won by a team from our Park House campus.  The basketball team was won by the Korean team in a thrilling final.

Clubs

There are many clubs and societies for students at Bellerbys Brighton.  Whatever your interest or hobby, you can usually find others who share it.

Bellerbys Business Club
Students are encouraged to develop their business skills through the Bellerbys Business Club microenterprise scheme.  It's a great way to learn and make money at the same time!  One successful group this year organised a UK-Malaysian Film Festival at the Odeon cinema in Brighton.  It was the first ever Malaysian film festival in the UK and was sponsored by the Malaysian Tourist Board.  It received a great deal of coverage in the Malaysian press.

The Bellerbys Law Society
The college has a Law Society for those students interested in law, police, criminal pathology and related careers.  The group recently enjoyed a session on "what makes a good law?".

Debating Society & United Nations Association
We have a very active Debating Society which simulates debates held at the United Nations in New York.  Members of the group recently attended the USA v UK International Debate in London.  All members of the United Nations Association (UNA) are actually employees of the United Nations - albeit as volunteers!  This looks very impressive on personal statements and references!

Cinema Club & Theatre Club
The Cinema Club have been to see many international films this year, including Russian, Kazakhstani, Chinese and Japanese films.  The Theatre Club went to see an open-air production of Shakepeare's 'Twelfth Night' at St. Ann's Well Gardens and also presented a version of 'Macbeth' as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival.

Music Club
The Music Club made trips to Brighton's Dome Theatre to see the Brighton Youth Orchestra and Nicola Benedetti, the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2004.

Thursday Night Activities
Each week you can join other students to take part in a range of activities at one of our student residences.  This year these have included a karaoke competition, discos, cinema evenings and an Egyptian belly dancing evening!  We also had a staff quiz night, a tango evening for beginners, a Lucky 7 casino night and a fashion and beauty parade.

National Academic Competitions

Lots of Bellerbys students have been successful in national academic competitions.  Our Young Economist of the Year, My An Le, from Vietnam, achieved one of the best 30 scores in the country.  Our Maths Olympics team scored higher than Eton College and Yizhao Zhou achieved a maximum score, one of only six students in the whole country, out of an entry of more than 3,000.

Yu Ma, a student from Shenyang, achieved a score in the National Intelligence Championsip that placed her in the top 0.5% of the country - and this in a second language!  A similar result was achieved by To Tranh from Vietnam when winning the Young Chemist of the Year competition.  Kristy Yu also won the Brighton Science Festival competition.  Andy Banruo Li won a media competition which has led to him spending three days as a photojournalist for The Guardian newspaper in London.

Bellerbys College Competitions

We also run many different prize competitions within the college each year.  These have included Essay Writing, Football Fantasy, Photography, Film Making, Animation, Text Messaging, Poetry, Fashion Design, Origami and more. We also ran Chess, Shangchi, Suduko, Karuro, Heyawake and Weiqi tournaments.

Careers

In our Careers Room you can get careers advice and get help with choosing the right university course for you.  You can also pick up a copy of the  Bellerbys Careers Bulletin monthly newsletter, plus there are monthly lectures on topics such as law, management, accountancy, voluntary service and life at university, often with guest speakers.

Voluntary Service

Many Bellerbys students are involved in voluntary service in the community, working in local nursing homes, with animals, the Brownies, at the Toy Museum, and so on.  Voluntary service is highly recommended and takes just two to four hours per week.  It is an excellent way to develop your language skills, to engage with the local community and to help others.  You can also enter it on your UCAS form.
