The Principal Goes To Russia
John Rushton, Principal, Bellerbys College Cambridge
Last month I spent 10 days in Russia, to meet parents, prospective students and agents. I had a hectic schedule, involving visits to three cities in the Urals, in addition to several days in Moscow.
I flew to Moscow and stayed in a hotel near to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The next day I did a presentation to agents, followed by interviews with prospective students. Later in the evening (23.15 to be precise), I took a flight to Chelyabinsk, a major city in the Ural Mountains and spent two days with local agents, parents and prospective students. Afterwards, I travelled to Ekaterinburg for another day of visits and interviews. That evening the temperature fell to minus 27, which even the Russians admitted was cold for mid-November.
Next I caught the night sleeper train to Perm, a city known, amongst other things, as where Boris Pasternak wrote "Dr Zhivago". After a busy day I was given a ticket to the ballet, to see "Anyuta". This was excellent, the Perm ballet is one of the best in Russia, and it was staged in the Perm Opera House, a beautiful 19th Century building. Having a restful evening of culture did not last long however, it was up early the next morning for a 06.00 flight back to Moscow! Because of the time difference the flight left at 06.00 and arrived at 06.20, which made for a full day of meetings in the Russian capital. There were then four full days in Moscow, before flying back to Heathrow on Sunday. What a trip!
