John Wenham, Head of Science Faculty
B.Ed (Hons) Physical Science (Soton), Cert Ed.
"I have liked and enjoyed Chemistry since being taught it at school. I qualified as a teacher in 1974 and have been at Bellerbys College since 1992, joining initially as a Chemistry Teacher, becoming Head of Science in 2005.
I teach Chemistry to A level and Foundation students. I place great emphasis on practical work and the relationship between this and theoretical principles. I try to take an interest in every student who is doing a Science course at Bellerbys, no matter what their level of achievement or ambition. I hope that what I do is seen as being of benefit to current students, but of course in some of the administrative work I do, the student benefit will be indirect and not easily quantifiable.
Outside of work, I am a sociable type, being a member of 15 clubs and societies. I am interested in railways - their history, their effect upon society and their operation. I collect things as well, such as railway relics and political memorabilia. I do voluntary work at the Beachy Head Countryside Centre, chatting to tourists and selling souvenirs, and so on. I always tell students not to aimlessly wander about Brighton during a fine weekend, but to go inland - you only have to go a mile or two inland to see lovely countryside and attractive buildings (and nice pubs!)."
