The course is carefully designed to focus on the academic areas most useful to your future study intentions.
Academic Structure
You will study core subjects, with all other Foundation students, plus five Science modules.
Cell Biology
Students are taught about biological molecules, cellular structure and function, chromosomes structure, cell division, movement through cell membranes, enzymes and metabolic pathways.
Physiology
Students are taught about the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the digestive system, osmo-regulation, control and coordination and reproduction.
Chemistry 1
Students are taught formulae, equations and moles, atomic structure, introduction to redox systems, thermodynamics and bonding.
Chemistry 2
Students are taught about equilibria, acid-base equilibria, kinetics and organic chemistry.
Applied Statistics for Scientists
Students are taught probability and statistics, random variables, discrete distributions, regression and correlation and hypothesis’ testing. (Alternatively Pure Maths 2 from the Engineering route can be studied).
Pure Maths 1
Students are taught the basics of algebra, differentiation & calculus, and probability and experimental laws.
For students who do not wish to take A Levels as the best preparation to medical school this Science Foundation route can progress to the University of Sussex Pre-Medical School degree course.
"The study environment is undoubtedly excellent. As I am a Foundation Science student, I do experiments. Laboratories are well equipped and assistants are very helpful."
Ka Yi Wong from China, studying Science Foundation
