Art & Design Foundation Course

The Bellerbys Art & Design Foundation course is ideal for students wishing to study Art and Design related degrees at university, including Fine Art, Studio Art, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Industrial Design, plus some Architecture and Media Studies courses.  The course is carefully designed to focus on the academic areas most useful to your future study intentions.

Academic Structure

You will study core subjects, with all other Foundation students, plus you'll learn how to develop basic drawing and painting skills, make effective use of the sketchbook, explore recording methods, develop visual perception, acquire professional attitudes to set projects and show a critical, contextual and historical awareness of art & design.

You will then choose one of the following specialist pathways (please check for availability by centre):

Architecture
Interior, exterior, historical, contextual, critical analysis of local environment, small-scale items and large projects.  Personal portfolio development, interview techniques and extended self-study project.

Fashion Design & Retailing
Materials, colours, function and design.  Historical, critical and contextual analysis.  The fashion cycle - design, exposition, production and retail.  Personal collection and extended self-study plus appropriate visits.

Interior Design
Materials, colour, shape, space and function.  Historical, critical and contextual analysis.  The design cycle.  Retail analysis and extended analysis of local interior design exemplars.  Personal portfolio and extended self-study.

Product Design
Materials, function, design and colour.  Historical, critical and contextual analysis.  Traditional crafts.  The product design lifecycle.  Design classics, e.g. Coca Cola.  Extended self-study and product design portfolio.

Photography
Digital, film, monochrome and colour.  Historical, critical and contextual analysis.  Extended study of a key photographic personality.  Comparative camera analysis and functions.  Personal portfolio and photo-essays.

Fine Arts
Extended drawing and painting skills.  History of Art.  2-D and 3-D options.  Critical and contextual analysis.  Portfolio development and extended self-study.

Graphics Communications
History of advertising and communications.  The design cycle.  Photoshop and additional tools.  Critical and contextual analysis.  Portfolio development and extended self-study.
