Computing Foundation Preparation for IT-related degrees

Bellerbys Brighton is our specialist centre for computing systems, providing a modern learning environment featuring the latest technology.

The Bellerbys Computing Foundation pathway is ideal for students wishing to go on to study Computer Science, Software Engineering or IT related courses at university. The programme includes units in web design, programming and business as well as the core foundation modules.

  • Age: Students are normally 16.5 or over
  1. Please note: Brighton – students joining the Foundation Programme must be under 19 years of age
  • Course length: 3 terms & a 3.5 term starting week commencing 31 October 2016

    • Satisfactory completion of secondary or high school
    • IELTS 4.5 or equivalent (for the September start) or IELTS 5 or equivalent (for the October and January start).

  • Note: Students starting Foundation Preparation Programme in October have the opportunity to become accustomed to their environment and British teaching styles. In the first term, October – December, students benefit from extra preparation in English and critical thinking skills and additional university guidance, as well as being given a supervised self-study enrichment project and taster lessons. Foundation study will begin in January.

Computing Foundation students spend 18-25 hours per week in class. The course is modular in structure and consists of core modules studied by all Foundation students and modules tailored for Computing students.

Core modules

Foundation English Skills 1

Develop the ability to read academic texts, write short academic texts, take notes from written and oral sources and use spoken English to discuss a variety of topics.

Foundation English Skills 2

Improve all the abilities in FES1, developing greater accuracy, speed, cohesion, organisation and presentation.

Foundation English Skills 3

Develop academic English skills for university. This continually assessed course module includes an extended research essay based on an aspect of British culture, debates and discussions, listening, note-taking and summarising as well as oral presentation.

Computer Information Technology

Improve IT literacy and creativity using MS Office, Business and Media applications; develop internet research skills.

Computing modules

Pure Maths 1

Algebra, including transformations, logarithms, series; trigonometry including sin, cos, tan for any angle, solving equations; radians; circles; basic data handling,- mean, mode, median, standard deviation; introduction to calculus including stationary points, equations of tangents and normals, areas.


Design and write computer programs; work at individual project-based problem solving; build simple components in Java and combine into program solutions.


Acquire a range of skills through practice with physical data models and in the application of theoretical concepts of Relational Database Management System; develop use of theoretical concepts in data design.

Systems Analysis

Develop an understanding of the range of problems that computer systems can help to solve and the main principles of problem solving; acquire the skills necessary to apply this understanding to the development of system solutions.

Web Technologies

Using an appropriate range of languages and adopting a ‘Mobile First’ approach to Responsive Web Design (RWD), develop design skills to plan the layout and navigation for web pages and acquire scripting skills and use related technologies to write and manage web pages.

Decision Maths

Gain an understanding of algorithms; algorithms on graphs; the route inspection problem; critical path analysis and linear programming.

On successful completion of the Computing Foundation you can progress to an undergraduate degree at one of our destination universities.

The Extended Foundation is a four-term academic programme taught at our Brighton and London colleges. The course is designed for students whose academic readiness or English level is not sufficient to begin the usual three-term Foundation.

You'll study English and three other academic modules in term one before progressing to the Computing Foundation for terms two, three and four, as follows:

Extended Foundation key facts

  • Course length: 1 term in addition to the three-term foundation
  • Start dates: September
  • Entry requirements: Satisfactory completion of secondary or high school and IELTS 4.0 or equivalent

To study the Computing Foundation you will need to have completed secondary or high school to a satisfactory level.

English language requirements

To study the Foundation programme you will need to take a UKVI IELTS English language test and achieve a minimum level of 4.5 overall (for the September start) or level of 5 overall (for the October and January start).

English Language Preparation Programme (ELPP)

If you do not meet the English language requirements for entry to the Foundation you can study one, two or three terms of English Language Preparation prior to the start of your academic programme. The length of your English Language Preparation Programme will depend on your current English language level.

The Bellerbys English Language Preparation Programme is a fast, personalised and highly effective programme that will fully equip you to succeed in your studies. The programme comprises 25 hours per week of general English, examination preparation and skills classes. Throughout the programme you will be closely monitored by a personal tutor and tested regularly to ensure you reach the English language level required for your academic programme.
