Meftah has been studying here for just over a year and has been working towards his dream to be a doctor and eye surgeon. So far so good, as this year he was the number one AS level student after achieving straight A’s! We spoke to him to find out a bit more about his experience at Bellerbys and what studying in the UK has taught him so far both in and out of the classroom.

What’s the best thing about studying in an international school?

One of the best things about studying at Bellerbys is being surrounded by people from all over the world. Not only does this mean that I learn about different cultures and traditions, but it also means that I can collect knowledge from many different sources to help me with my study. I can seek help from everyone! My teachers, my classmates and my friends, there is always someone who will know the answer. This is because education systems differ around the world so may focus more on different subjects more than others. It’s like having the world all in one place and it opens your eyes to all the different kinds of knowledge you can get. The students here are high achievers and big dreamers. When I see people around me dreaming of big things, I can’t help but dream big too. When you’re surrounded by the best, you will be better.

Has living in the UK helped you to become more independent?

Before I came to the UK, I didn’t have to think about finance, cooking or making big decisions by myself, but now I do everything on my own. If I need help with something, I can always find a way to get it.

Is studying in the UK what you expected it would be?

You have experiences that you could never image. I can go home to my family and friends in Libya and tell them stories of places I’ve been and things I have done that they would never have heard of. From the food you eat to the people you meet, the experience of living in the UK will bring surprises that make great memories. It is really amazing.

What do you hope to achieve when you leave Bellerbys?

I have always known I want to be a doctor and since day one at Bellerbys, the staff have helped me with every step towards making it happen. There is a Medical Club which gives us extra support in studying to become a doctor as well as advice on how to get volunteer work to support our application to medical school.

Meftah seems to have a very realistic, practical and determined approach to making his dream a reality. He seems very excited to be approaching the final step towards going to medical school and is currently awaiting the results of his UCAS application!
