Healthy eating and lifestyle tips

As part of International Food Month, we’ve being celebrating all things nutritious here at Bellerbys College Brighton. PE teacher, Laura Davies, shares her top tips for being a healthy and happy student all year round.

PE teacher Laura Davies’ tops tips for being a healthy and happy student:

  1. Drink water. Drinking enough water can help boost your concentration as well as keep you from overeating. Make sure to keep hydrated as you go through your day by bringing water with you to class.
  2. Eat breakfast. Start your day off in the right way with a good meal when you get up. Whether you're rolling out of bed at noon or up at the crack of dawn for class, make sure you start your day with a balanced, healthy meal.
  3. Fruit & Veg. Even if fruits and vegetables don't comprise some of your favourite foods, try to incorporate at least a few of them into your diet each day.
  4. Takeaways. Takeaways are often cheap, convenient and satisfying but, unfortunately, they're not always very healthy. Some takeaway meals can push you over your recommended daily maximum amount of salt and fat, which can lead to a variety of health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. Try to limit the number of takeaways you consume.
  5. Sleep. Get a full night's rest whenever possible. While the amount of sleep each person needs varies, most people need 7-9 hours to feel fully rested. While this may not be possible every night, try to sleep a full night whenever you get the chance.
  6. Leisure time
    Exercise: Fitting exercise into a busy schedule isn't always the easiest thing to do, but if you find a way to make it fun for yourself you'll be much more likely to keep it up.
    Relax with hobbies: Whether you like to listen to music or enjoy playing video games, making time for the things you love is an important part of keeping yourself from getting too stressed out.
    Spend time with friends: Cheer yourself up by spending time with people you enjoying being around. Eat dinner with friends, hang out and watch TV or take a walk to get away from the stress of homework.
  7. Don't smoke. Smoking isn't good for you or anyone around you. If you do smoke and you wish to quit, you should approach our friendly counsellors and Student Services staff for advice.
  8. Study stress
    Create a routine: If you get yourself in the habit of studying, working out, and sleeping at certain hours, it will be easier to fit in all the things you need to do in a day without feeling too stressed out.
  9. Put limits on work hours: You can't work all the time – fun and relaxation have to be part of your routine as well. Limit your working time to give yourself time to sleep and rest up so you won't become run down or ill.
  10. Enjoy your food. It’s ok to enjoy takeaways, desserts and unhealthy snacks – we all do. But try to make sure you stick to a healthy, balanced diet and only eat foods high in fat or sugar on occasion. Check the ingredient labels to get a better idea of what you are consuming. And don’t forget, healthy food can still be delicious!
