What’s your favourite thing about teaching international students?
There’s a lot of culture in the room and students bring different kinds of knowledge from all over the world. The diversity of each class makes lessons very interesting and enjoyable.

What was your first day like at Bellerbys College?
On my first day teaching at Bellerbys College I was of course nervous, but the staff were very helpful and supportive. My students were also very welcoming. They wanted to know more about me so asked me lots of questions. It’s a very friendly atmosphere so it was easy to settle into.

Do you have any advice for students who are nervous about their English level?
I lived abroad for a few years in France and I remember what it’s like to feel nervous about language. My advice would be to listen to the radio and speak English as much as you can while you’re out and about. As you start to realise that people can understand you, you will grow in confidence. English is the communal language at the college so everyone is very supportive of each other and there is a teamwork atmosphere. By the end of the year I always find that my students are fluent in English. There’s really nothing to worry about.

Why do you like teaching your subjects?
I studied the subjects I teach at University and for my PhD. I find them very interesting. Maths is a great way of expanding the mind and physics describes the world around us in a very logical way. Physics is an exciting subject as there are always new discoveries happening that we can talk about in lessons. Learning these subjects at Bellerbys gives students a strong foundation for future careers.

What makes a lesson great for you?
I like teaching practical lessons and seeing my students make discoveries towards developing their own ideas. It’s great to see students pushing themselves and their knowledge. I enjoy being the guide to their growth.
