Firstly, we’d like to congratulate you on the decision to study in the UK. Many students feel very worried that they will feel lonely or uncomfortable due to their English level, but we’re here to ease your worries and get you feeling confident about your new adventure.
1. You’re not alone.
You’re coming to an international school where all the other students are in the same situation as you. You’ll be in a safe environment where you can relate to the other students, and the teachers will understand any concerns you might have. Also, while you’re walking around your new city you’ll hear many different accents and languages. There will undoubtedly be someone to talk to who speaks your language if you get really stuck.
2. That’s what we’re here for.
The teachers and staff at Bellerbys are highly trained in working with international students. There’s no language level that fazes them. They know exactly what to do to help you improve your English and you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll learn. The staff and teachers are always there for you to ask any language-related questions and there are extra English lessons you can go to if you feel you need to.
3. You’ll make friends quickly.
Your new classmates may be feeling nervous too and you’ll quickly get to know who speaks your language so that you can talk to them. We recommend you try to speak to as many people from different nationalities as possible and speak in English as much as you can as it helps you to learn much faster. Helping each other with English is something you’ll be doing quite a lot with other students, whether it’s in the classroom or out and about. It’s amazing how quickly friendships grow because of it.
4. You can go a long way without using words.
If you get so stuck that you simply don’t know the words to express yourself, you’ll be surprised how well actions and body language, such as hand gestures and facial expressions, can communicate what you’re trying to say.
5. You probably know more than you think.
We always find that one of the biggest barriers for our students is confidence in their English ability. We totally understand! When you’re learning a language it feels like there’s a never ending world of new words to learn. Students often say they think their English is poor, but we think they’re doing really well. Remember to feel proud of all that you know already, many people never learn a second language.
So there you have it! Our top five reasons why you don’t need to worry about your English level. We’re here to help and you’re not alone.
