David Shannon, Accomodation Manager
"My role at the college is the management of the accommodation department. We have a wonderful team here, who have a great deal of experience in the field and are extremely welcoming and professional in their approach.
I mainly deal with the sourcing and allocation of family ‘homestays’, which itself is an interesting job. It means I get to go out and about in Oxford to meet the families personally and snoop around their homes to ensure our high standards are met or hopefully exceeded. I also work closely with the students to make sure their stay is as comfortable and hassle-free as possible. I can act as a liaison for the student if they need me to, and I try very hard to see that there is continuity and reliability in all of my contact with both students and families.
I have been working at Bellerbys since the beginning of summer 2008, so I arrived at a very hectic, demanding and vibrant time. This of course didn't scare me as I had amazing support from all of the staff at the school. Even though they themselves were in great demand, nobody ever hesitated to hold my hand through it, which has really helped me find my feet! Also working in the centre of Oxford can be a very exciting experience, as you can feel the transient atmosphere spilling in from Broad Street, and the views from the office are magnificent!
Personally I have travelled extensively, mainly throughout Asia, Australia and the Americas. I also love to take myself off to European cities whenever I can rustle up some time and money. I have always been an avid fan of music. I compose my own music on my humble set-up at home, which keeps me out of trouble and keeps the neighbours stimulated. I am about to embark on a degree in International Relations with the Open University which I am very much looking forward to. I think it will complement my job nicely and vice versa.
Having travelled all over, Oxford is still very much up there in my list of favourite cities. It's just the right size. It's vibrant and eccentric and the music scene here caters for pretty much any niche I can think of. And it is one of the friendliest and safest cities I have ever experienced."
